This 3,000 resident community lies at the junction of the Ottawa and the Mattawa rivers.
The name is the Ojibway phrase for "meeting of the waters." The town grew in initial importance
as the point where voyageurs and fur traders turned west. It later grew as a major point for
logging in the forests to the north and west, which were then sent downriver to Ottawa.
The community, now at a major junction on the Trans-Canada Highway,
offers good fishing and hunting, and has great fall colours.

Housed in a red pine log building at the confluence of the Ottawa and Mattawa rivers, the museum has exhibits portraying early settlement in the region. Open daily, June through August.
Brent Crater
South, at the edge of Algonquin Park
This create is the second largest known meteor strike in Canada. The crater is centered around Gilmour Lake, best accessed by driving 31 km south on Highway 17, and then heading west on a gravel road to Brent. The crater is about 10 km north of Brent.
