Nearby: Buckingham, Quebec
This pretty community of 12,000, located a half hour east of Gatineau (roughly across the river
from Cumberland Ontario) combines natural charm and history. The downtown has many businesses
in older buildings. Landing Park marks the location where miners were ferried to the area mines.
Water Castle features an 1893 water power dam. Maclaren Park is home to the Buckingham en Fete
summer festival, and the Country Festival in mid-August.
The community took its name form the township of Buckingham which was named in 1795, partly
because many settlers we believed to have come from Buckinghamshire, northwest of London,
and partly for George Nugent Temple Grenville (1753-1813), the 1st Marquess of Buckingham,
who twice served as lord lieutenant of Ireland in the 1780s.
Annual Events:
Canadian Ski Marathon (mid February), Buckingham summer festival (mid July)
