Automobiles: Replacing your Gasoline Fuel Filter

The fuel in your car's gas tank commonly contains dirt, rust and other contaminants. This is picked up from many sources, including a fuel storage tank, the fuel-dispensing pump, or the automobile tank itself. The gasoline filter removes these contaminants from the fuel to prevent damage and wear to internal carburetor, fuel injection, and engine parts.

Do servicing only when the engine is cool to avoid fire hazards. After installing a new gasoline filter, start the engine and check all connections for leaks.

In-Line Disposable Type (most common):
Use clamp pliers to remove the retaining clips that hold the filter in place, and pull the filter off the fuel line. When installing the new filter, match the arrow on the housing with the fuel flow direction. Do not confuse the vapor return line, if there is one, with the fuel outlet.

Replaceable Cartridge Type:
Unscrew the housing cover and pull the old cartridge straight off the housing. Clean the housing and insert a new pleated paper cartridge and reassemble the housing.

In-Carburetor:
Using two wrenches, disconnect the fuel line at the carburetor. Remove the large retaining nut, the gasket (which may or may not be attached to the nut), and the used filter. Behind the filter is a spring, which is reused, to provide proper tension and filter sealing. Install the new filter gasket and retaining nut, and reconnect the fuel line.

Sintered bronze:
Use the same replacement procedure as with the in-carburetor filter.
