Kanata Lakes/ Marchwood neighbourhoods of Ottawa-Gatineau



The Kanata Lakes area includes Marchwood Lakeside , and the Kanata North Business Park and is bounded by the railway line on the north and the Queensway/417 to the south, and Knudson Avenue & Weslock to the east, separating this community from Beaverbrook. The community is built around the [private] Kanata Lakes Golf Club.Marchwood is the neighbourhood west of Castlefrank, which has lots of room for expansion in coming years, as it grows west of Kanata Avenue

The Kanata Lakes area was first settled by Europeans in the early 1900s, including Hamnett Kirkes Pinhey, an English merchant, who settled the area known today as Pinhey's Point.

The area was heavily agricultural until the 1960s, when Bill Teron, a developer and urban planner bought 4000 acres of rural land and began to build his interpretation of a model community. The development grew to encompass several neighbourhoods and plans for industrial development. By 1978, Kanata was formally incorporated as a city, and continued to expand and by the late 1990s Kanata had become a hub for technology companies..

The Kanata Lakes' has the second of two urban, 18-hole golf courses in Kanata. Unlike the Marshes Golf Course in the Kanata North Business Park, this gold course is not open to the public - members only.

The Kanata Lakes area has about 18,000 residents.

Homes

Kanata Lakes is very recent neighbourhood, with only 2% of the homes pre-dating1985, 10% of homes built between 1986 and 1990, 22% built 1991 -1995, 25% built 1996 and 2000, and the largest number (40%) constructed after 2001.

By 2006, Kanata Lakes had 6,000 dwellings, of which 60% are single family, 4% are semi-detached, 34% are row houses, 2% are apartment duplexes, less than 1% were high-rise apartments (over 5 stories), and 2% were apartments less than 5 stories. The great majority 96% of residents own, while only 4% rent their homes.

Currently the KNL consortium, consisting of Urbandale and Richcraft, are clear-cutting two square kilometres of the Beaver Pond Forest to facilitate further development of Kanata Lakes..

Schools

Kanata Lakes has an English public, French/bilingual public, and is home to Kanata's All Saints Catholic High School and to Earl of March High School.

Shopping

The Kanata Centrum power centre and adjacent retail developments are Ottawa's third largest shopping centre.

Recreation

Arts groups in Kanata Lakes include the Kanata Symphony and Kanata Theatre. The AMC Kanata Theatre complex, on the south end of the neighbourhood is the largest in all of Ottawa.

The neighbourhood is home to the Kanata Recreation Complex. Sports groups, in addition to the private Kanata Lakes Golf Club, include a sailing club, a bicycle club, Kanata Soccer, March Kanata Tennis club, the Kanata blazers' hockey and the March Kanata figure skating club. The NCC Equestrian Park is just a few minutes away.
