Glen Cairn- Kanata South neighbourhoods of Ottawa-Gatineau



Glen Cairn is the Kanata community west of Eagleson Road, and south of Hazeldean Road with Terry Fox Drive along its western edge. Along the southern edge is the Kanata South Business Park. Glen Cairn is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Kanata, developed in the 1960s and 1970s by Bill Teron, and includes some low income housing.

Glen Cairn has about 9,000 residents, who are 75% unilingual English, and 24% bilingual.

Homes

Glen Cairn-Kanata South is a relatively new neighbourhood. Few (1%) dwellings in this neighbourhood pre-dating 1960, and 23% built between 1961 and 1970, 47% built 1971 -1980, 16% built 1981 - 1985, and 3% were constructed after 1986.

Glen Cairn-Kanata South has 2,700 dwellings, of which 50% are single family, 34% are semi-detached, and 15% are row houses. The great majority (89%) of residents own their homes and 11% rent.

Schools

Glen Cairn has two public elementary schools and one Catholic elementary, a public library, and is home to one of Kanata's oldest high schools A. Y. Jackson Secondary School. Catholic high school students attend Holy Trinity Catholic High School in Katimavik to the north.

Shopping

There is a variety of shopping along Hazeldean Drive to the north, and along Eagleson Rd are the Hazeldean Mall and First City Shopping Centre (in the Kanata South Business Park)

Recreation

The community has a recreation centre in Glen Cairn Park with an indoor pool, racquet courts, and public library, and there is a running track beside AY Jackson High School. The southern end of the neighbourhood adjoins the Trans-Canada Trail, connecting into downtown Ottawa, and east & west to other parts of Canada. To the east of Eagleson Rd is the Stony Swamp Conservation Area which extends east all the way to Bells Corners.
