Grenfell Glen / Pine Glen / Country Place / Clearview neighbourhods in Ottawa-Gatineau
Grenfell Glen is a small upscale community surrounded by Greenbelts' fields and forests. This community lies between Prince of Wales Dr (which runs along the Rideau River) and Woodroffe, between Hunts Club Rd to the north and Fallowfield Rd to the south. Grenfell Glen is also neighbour to Pineglen, which is on the other side of the railway tracks on its border to the south. To the north of these two communities is the Merivale Industrial light industrial area and the Rideau Heights Business Park. Country Placeis located alongside Prince of Wales, and adjacent to the Black Rapids Locks on the Rideau Canal system. Merivale Gardens is a small enclave nestled in the middle of the Pinhey Forest, ironically given its name, accessed off Woodroffe Avenue.
The Merivale Gardens-Grenfell Glen-Pineglen-Country Place area had about 3,000 residents.
This is a relatively new neighbourhood, but has not experienced re-development anytime over the last few decades. Twenty-nine percent of homes were built 1946 - 1960, and a majority of homes (55%) were built between 1961 and 1980, and only 13% were built after 1981. The community has about 1,000 dwellings, of which almost all (96%) are single family detached, 1% are semi-detached, 1% are row houses, and 1% are low-rise apartments. Consistent with single family ownership, the majority of residents (98%) own their homes and only 2% of residents rent.
Shopping is either to the north along the Merivale Road corridor, or the big box stores in Barrhaven, to the west via Fallowfield.
Pinhey Forest, named after Charles H. Pinhey, is located immediately to Grenfell Glen's north. It is bordered on the north by West Hunt Club Road. The small portion of forest to the West of Grenfell Glen was intended to be the remainder of the neighbourhood and still has streets that are named on some maps. The developer of the neighbourhood sold that remainder of land to the NCC. As a result, the community is in the middle of the Ottawa green belt.
