Home: Rocklife - New Edinburgh
Where
This part of Ottawa used to be a separate municipality, and is home to some of the most expensive homes in Ottawa. This well-treed area is on a hill east of the Rideau River and counts among its residents the Prime Minster and the Governor General. The area is also popular with foreign ambassadors, who are noted by their national flags on their front lawns, and high-tech gazillionaires like Michael Cowpland (Mitel & Corel). New Edinburgh is right on the banks of the Rideau River and has (slightly) more affordable homes with ready access to the area's many parks, though "affordability' happens further south in Vanier.
Homes
The homes in Rockcliffe are large single family dwellings with large enclosed lawns, some with pools and tennis courts. Several of the homes were built back in the 1860s, though most were built in the 1920s (when it was still thought to be too far from downtown) in a Tudor or Georgian style. Homes here tend to run $500,000 to several million. New Edinburgh has a number of neighbourhoods including Lindenlea and Manor Park, with houses running $300,000 to $500,000
Schools
This area has one public elementary and one Catholic school and a library. It is very accessible to Ottawa University.
Shopping
Shopping for this area is along Beechwood Ave and along Montreal Rd to the south. The Byward Market area is just across the Rideau River, as is the Rideau Centre mall.
Recreation
There are recreational pathways along the Rideau River's east bank and along the Ottawa River. Rockcliffe Park, maintained by the NCC, is along the banks of the Ottawa River. On the eastern edge is the pretty and somewhat secluded Hemlock Lake. The Ottawa Canoe Club, and RA Sailing Club has its boathouse in Rockcliffe park just to the east of the community. The museums and historical sites along Sussex Drive are readily accessible as is the National Aviation Museum at Rockcliffe.
