Home: Aylmer

Where
This 35,000 resident community is a few kilometres west of Hull, and is accessible to Ottawa via the Champlain Bridge. Lots in Aylmer are typically larger than in Ontario, the property taxes here are lower, and the prices in Aylmer are about 35% lower than those in Ontario. The parklands alongside the Ottawa River make for a pleasant commute into Ottawa along Boulevard de Lucerne. Every decade or so there are discussions about a bridge over the Deschenes Rapids to connect Aylmer with Ottawa's west end, which so far have gone to nought.

The town was first known as Symmes Landing in 1816 for Charles Symmes, a nephew of Philemon Wright, founder of nearby Hull. It was renamed in 1848 after Lord Aylmer, who was governor-in-chief of British North America from 1830 to 1835.

The neighbourhoods around the centre of town have been around for a long time, while the newer communities tend to extend to the east and north-west. Domain Champlain to the east, nestled against a large park of the same name, offers single-family, semi-detached and townhomes beginning at $89,000. Not far away is Village Eardley with semi-detached homes running $90,000 to $115,000. To the south of Chemin d'Aylmer is Parc Rivermead, close to the golf course, with larger homes running $205,000 to $275,000. The new neighbourhood of Quatre Saisons, near Wychwood offers larger homes close to the Ottawa River from $125,000. North of the Boulevard de l'Outaouais, is the community of Les Jardins Lavigne with single-family and semi-detached homes for $99,000 to $179,000.

Schools
Aylmer has 5 Catholic and 3 public elementary schools, a Catholic high school, and a public library. It is remote to Ottawa-based post-secondary institutions, but is just down the road from the Université du Quebec ŕ Hull.

Shopping
The community has a number of shopping malls and plazas clustered along Rue Principale / Chemin d'Ayulmer, just east of town centre. The Boulevard de l'Outaouais expressway makes residents readily accessible to Hull's larger shopping malls.

Recreation
The community has 5 golf courses, a beach, a marina, an ice arena, and several museums and historical homes. The community is connected via the NCC bike path network to Gatineau Park and to Ottawa's various attractions and venues.
